In the mid-17th century a number of Irish Catholics emigrated from Saint Kitts and Nevis in the
face of persecution
in 1995, the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted, covering the capital city of Plymouth in 40 ft (12m) of mud,
chasing away more than half of the population, and destroying much of the island
In 1979 George Martin completed building AIR Studios Montserrat which for nearly 11 years became one of the
most prolific music recording studios in the world playing host to all the stars of the time, including:
Paul McCartney, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Ultravox, Eric Clapton
and Lou Reed, to name but a few
