The first people to inhabit the island were the Caiquetios who migrated north from the Orinoco Basin in
South America and settled approximately 2,000 years ago
One of the most well known trees is the Divi Divi (Caesalpinia coriaria) which point to the west,
in the direction of the trade winds that come from the northeast
